He finished his PhD from Materials Science and Engineering Department of State University of New York at Stony Brook. After that, He joined the Materials Science and Engineering Department of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a postdoctoral research associate. He joined School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nanyang Technological University as an assistant professor in early 2008 and became a Professor in 2018.

He is currently the Chair of the Electrochemical Society, Singapore Section. He is a fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry Since 2018. He is a highly cited researcher in Materials Science for 2018 indicated by Thomson Reuters. He is the board member of Materials Research Express, (an IOP Journal) since 2016. Yan has published more than 280 papers (with total citation of >19000 and h index of 73) on two research area: (1) thermoelectric materials; (2) electrochemical properties of materials for energy storage or conversion.

讲座内容:

Delamination of black phosphorus (BP) into monolayer or few-layer, dubbed phosphorene, and manipulation of its newly discovered properties that are unattainable by its bulk structure have been a recent scientific breakthrough. As an elemental analogue of graphene, researchers intended to exploit its structural similarity to substitute graphene as anode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) as one of the dominant power sources for portable electronic devices. In addition, theoretical studies have revealed that Li diffusion along zigzag directions in phosphorene is hundreds times faster than that in MoS2 or graphene.

We will present our recent activities on synthesis of few layered black phosphorus nanosheets through diferent methods and study their Li/Na storage properties. Especially, we try to improve their chemical stability by forming composite structures with the aid of spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. It shows that excellent air stability of SPS-processed black phosphorus can be achieved over the 60 days observation in maintaining its high Li storage properties.
